From Me To We™ - The Keynote

How a divided room learns to perform as one.
Book This ExperienceBook NowYour people have never been more connected, or less close.
Teams are fragmented across time zones, tools and priorities. Engagement is falling year on year and trust is the thing leaders say they find hardest to build. The usual response is another platform or another away day. This is neither.
The Session
Doug opens with stories - including how a lonely boy from an English boarding school fell in love with drumming and found belonging in a rural village in Casamance, Senegal, and what thirty years of working with groups taught him about how connection really works. Along the way, the audience moves from listening to participating: sharing, breathing together, clapping in patterns, becoming increasingly aware of themselves and one another. The keynote builds in energy throughout, culminating in a fully participative musical finale where the room creates something together that none of them could create alone.
Built Around Your Theme
Every session is tailored to your theme. Doug speaks to your organizers before the event, and the framework slide carries your language, not his.
Is This The Right Format For Your Room?
If your people will be seated in rows in a large auditorium, this is the one. If they can sit with an instrument in front of them, you might want to consider The Drums.
Learning Objectives
What your people will take away
By the end of the session, your audience will be able to:
- Recognize the everyday habits that leave people surrounded by colleagues and still unknown to them
- Tell the difference between being in contact with someone and being known by them - and name where their own team sits on that line
- Apply the three steps of the From Me To We™ Method - awareness of self, awareness of others, collective synergy - to move any group from individual focus to shared focus
- Explain why teams that synchronize trust each other faster and hold together better under pressure
- Articulate what they contribute that no one else in the room could, and connect it to what the organization is building
- Use a two-minute daily practice for staying connected - one that survives the flight home
Step by Step
The Journey
Doug walks on
He comes out with a drum under his arm and starts talking - not about leadership, but about being lonely. A childhood spent surrounded by people and apart from them, and what finally cured it. It is disarming, and it is deliberate: by the time he reaches what worked for him, most of the room has recognized something of itself in the story. The rest of the session is spent unpacking it together.
The method, and the first move
Doug names the From Me To We™ Method and ties it to your event theme on a tailored slide. Then the room gets up. A full-body tapping warm-up brings people into their bodies; the Clap/Click/Stomp exercise has them breathing together and listening to each other. A few minutes in, several hundred people are doing the same thing at the same time - most of them surprised to find they don't mind.
Leading in front of the room
Volunteers from your own organization take over and lead the exercise, in front of everyone. This is where leadership stops being a topic and becomes visible: who can hold a room, what it costs to step outside a comfort zone, how fast a group responds to someone genuinely paying attention.
Turn to the person next to you
Doug asks the room a few questions and then asks people to answer them honestly, to whoever is sitting beside them. What comes back is not small talk. This is the empathy and values work - what people have chosen, what they have not, and the handful of things actually driving them - and it takes a conference room somewhere conference rooms do not usually go. It is frequently the part people mention first afterwards.
The room becomes the instrument
No demonstration, nothing clever to watch. Doug layers the room itself - body percussion and voice, one part at a time, until several hundred people are holding a piece of music that none of them could hold alone and all of them are making. Your people name what they are taking away, out loud, and Doug closes. Everybody leaves with something slightly different and all of it points the same way: energized, closer to each other than when they walked in, and carrying a physical memory of what belonging feels like.
