From Me To We™ - The Drums

Every hand on a drum. One team by the end of the session.
Book This ExperienceBook NowYou can tell a team to collaborate. But you cannot tell them what it feels like.
Most team sessions describe collaboration and hope it transfers. This one skips the description. Ten, five hundred or three thousand people each get an instrument, and within minutes they are doing the thing everyone has been talking about all day - listening before contributing, holding their part while someone else takes the lead, noticing immediately when someone is left out.
The Session
Doug hands the room a rhythm one layer at a time. Nobody is asked to perform and nobody needs to have played before. What happens instead is that a room of strangers, or of colleagues who have never truly worked together, discovers it can build something none of them could build alone - and, crucially, notices exactly what made that possible.
Where It Fits
It works as a conference opener, a leadership kick-off, or the close of a strategy offsite where the message needs to stick. It has followed keynote speakers and preceded CEO addresses. It has also fixed a great many afternoons that were dying.
The Drums Are Our Problem, Not Yours
Instruments are hired locally wherever possible and delivered to your venue the day before the event, then collected the day after - never on show day, and never in the middle of your morning schedule. Doug travels with support musicians.
Learning Objectives
What your people will take away
By the end of the session, your team will be able to:
- Describe, from direct experience, what it feels like when a group locks into one rhythm
- Practice listening before contributing - because you cannot answer a rhythm you did not actually hear
- Recognize how quickly one unheard voice changes the whole result
- Lead and follow inside the same five minutes, and tell which one the moment calls for
- Point to what psychological safety feels like, not just what it means
- Name a shared reference point the team can call on in meetings for months afterwards
Step by Step
The Journey
Framing and awakening
Doug sets the intention for the session and ties it to your theme, then brings the room out of its heads and into its bodies with a gentle physical warm-up. Nobody is asked to perform. A room that arrived checking its phones is present and paying attention.
Listening, then leading
An active listening exercise builds the trust everything after it depends on. Then the leadership challenge: a volunteer from your team leads the group, in front of the group. It is the moment people discover how differently a room responds to someone who is listening versus someone who is only instructing. A short reflection film closes the section and turns the exercise into a question about purpose.
The rhythm before the drum
The rhythms are taught with the voice, before anyone touches an instrument. Everybody in the room can already do this, which is the point - by the time the drums come into it, your people are not learning music, they are recognizing something they already know. It is why 'we're not musical' stops being a problem about four minutes in.
Hands on the drum
The basic technique: how to strike the skin, and the difference between the sounds it makes. Then Doug takes the rhythms the room already has in its voice and breaks them down onto the instrument. Nobody is asked to learn two things at once.
One room, one rhythm
Full drumming, at volume, the whole room together. Then quiet: each person writes down what they noticed, talks it through with one other person, and commits to something specific they will do differently as a leader. Doug closes. People leave with a memory in their hands and a commitment on paper.
